P.11 .........
Components

Now that we have covered (1.) Quadrants and (2.) Levels/(3.) Lines, we can add the next two components to complete the 5 aspects of the IOS Basics.

 4. STATES AND STAGES

While there are different stage structures that an individual passes through in development, there are different states of consciousness that require no development, such as waking, sleeping-dreaming and deep sleep (the exterior correlates being beta, alpha, and delta brainwaves). The Wilbers-Combs Lattice is a recent model of this difference described in the Wilber-5 page.

5. TYPES

Types represents the qualitative differences in expression, the most basic/fundamental being masculine and feminine (or active and passive, without gender affiliation). Personality theories offer many models of types such as the Eneagram, Astrology, Jungian archetypes etc. Types are useful to understand our differences in expression. They are not useful when used as static categories of identification that has little or no relationship to reality.

Now, let's move on to other important aspects of the theory:

6. EGO (SHADOW AND PERSONA)

THE EGO can be defined in many ways depending on our use and contextual meaning. Some commons definitions include, as a (1) synonym for the "self" in psychological time or the unity of qualities (personality theory), (2) as a lower level of development, such as the Red vMeme of Spiral Dynamics and the impulsivity/selfishness in the beginning formation of identity, (3) as a trait for self-centeredness and self-absorption, such as “egomaniac” and “egocentric,” (4) as the ‘warrior’ archetype of the self, and (5) as a 'spiritual' enemy in that it is contraction.

In our context, we normally use the term “ego” in two ways (unless otherwise mentioned): in the vertical and relative sense, 1) as a trait of lower development, a part of ourselves to outgrow and 2) in a self-transcendence sense: as a block to spiritual growth as in “ego-identification,” and “self-contraction” of the identity or “the me”. This is to not assert that the ego is bad and does not serve a vital function for the person, because one must have an ego before one can transcend the ego, but that in higher stages of development, it is less likely to ‘call the shots’ and run the show, as it is an object of consciousness not the subject. Krishnamurti once said that, “when the me is not, compassion comes into being.”  With that said of course there will be times when the ego is nessary and helpful to the entire self system, which is a distinction that integral consciousness can make.

Transcendence of ego first requires integration of ego fragments. In No Boundaries, Wilber discusses the equation:

persona + shadow = ego

Here is a piece from that book as a pdf file: nbshadow.

THE PERSONA

In analytic psychology (Jungian) the persona is the self-image, how we would like to be seen to ourselves and each other. Most of the Culture of Narcissism is focused on personality and persona, presenting a 2-D image to Self and Other. People’s life force is giving entirely to the ‘persona marketing campaign.’The persona can be a construct of thought that has no relationship to reality. It is not the Real self but a fragment of the self.

 THE SHADOW

Here is a 3 part Shadow Series by Ken Wilber:

http://www.kenwilber.com/blog/show/51

“The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego personality, for no one can be conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort.”                -Carl Jung

The shadow is the opposite of the persona, all of the dark stuff that a person dissociates from, the disowned "I". We might humorously think of the shadow as the “director’s cut”.

In order to become a whole ego, one must become aware of Both the persona and shadow.

Before we can transcend the ego, we must first integrate its parts, known in analytic/Jungian psychology as the persona (self-image) and shadow (dissociated elements of psyche).

7. BOOMERITIS

Here is a good description of Boomeritis from Holons Magazine and an article by Wilber called Boomeritis Buddhism.

8. PRE-TRANS FALLACY

Also known as PTF, the pre-trans fallacy is the tendency to either elevate the pre-rational (oceanic narcissism, adualism, infantile awareness, pre-differentiated) as transrational (higher nondual states/stages, nirvana, samhadi) or reduce the transrational as prerational.
